"You'll get all the vitamins you need from a well balanced diet"

 

This statement is simply not true for the majority of the population. Surveys carried out in Britain in the last 20 years have shown that the majority of people are deficient in many vitamins and minerals, and are receiving well below the Recommended Daily Amount (RDA) of nutrients. The disturbing news is that the RDAs are set by the Government at a level to prevent nutritional diseases like scurvy and beri-beri, not to promote good health.

Even a balanced diet can still leave you deficient depending upon your body's specific requirements. These requirements increase if you smoke, drink, are exposed to stress, are pregnant, menopausal, over 50, drink tea or coffee, exercise regularly etc. Other factors include how well you digest and absorb your food, where the food was grown and under what conditions, how long it has been stored, and how it has been cooked.
